Volunteering
The tutoring program I volunteer for starts up again tonight, I signed up last year to help keep teenagers out of gangs and get their grades up. I knew it would be a rewarding experience but honestly, I initially looked into it to meet someone. I had been single for a couple years at that point and figured even if I didn’t meet anybody it would be a good way to spend my time.
I started dating Kevin a little less than a month before the program started up, and I am SO glad I signed up for it before then. It shouldn’t take an alterior motive to do something good, but thankfully my single-ness gave me a kick in the butt to get out there and just do it.
Spending a year with the kids had more of an impact on my life than I expected, they have so much potential and intelligence, and if just a few of them get all the way through the program to graduate, that will have made it all worth it.
So if you have been thinking of signing up for something that will help your community, kids, senior citizens, or even just one person, do it! Whatever your reason may be to do it, just show up. It will give you something pretty big in return and will mean more to the people you are helping than you will probably ever know.
